Phone network price bumps have cost UK public £1 billion - is it time to change?

The UK public has been cost a whopping £1 billion since 2013 thanks to their mobile phone contracts being bumped up mid-term with annual inflation charges, a new study has revealed, with further price hikes from major networks set to take place today.

The study - carried out by mobile analysts Tarifica and commissioned by Tesco Mobile - estimates that the cost for 2019 alone, based on the increase, could be a whopping £173 million to the public's wallets and purses.

Networks set to increase charges by up to 2.5% include Vodafone, EE, Three and O2. If you think a network change could save you some money then it's worth checking out our best mobile phone deals page here.

William Watts, director at Tarifica, said: "When calculating the cost to consumers, the most important factor to consider is that price escalations are applied every month until the contract has run its course. So, while many operators advertise the fact that these changes are only costing customers ‘between £1 and £2 per month,’ the cost over the life of a contract can approach £50 or more in some cases.

“Further, these escalations are stacked on top of each other year on year, meaning that the following year’s price increase is built off the one from the previous year, similar to compounding interest in a savings account”.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5 may launch this year and feature the Galaxy S10's chipset

It doesn't come as a huge surprise considering the Galaxy Tab S5e was announced alongside the Galaxy S10, but a new leak suggests that Samsung is readying itself to unveil the Galaxy Tab S5.

Based on details found within the firmware of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold, it looks as though the company has plans to unveil a Galaxy Tab S5 in the future.

The details were discovered by XDA Developers, and include specific mention of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset too.

That's the latest generation chipset from Qualcomm, and it features inside the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus if you buy those phones in the US. It also features in a variety of other top-end handsets that you can buy in 2019.

That's especially interesting as the company's last flagship tablet - the Galaxy Tab S4 - didn't feature the latest generation chipset at the time, instead opting for the Snapdragon 835 over the Snapdragon 845.

The code suggests the Galaxy Tab S5 is set to be a different product to the already-launched Galaxy Tab S5e. That's a mid-range tablet, while it's expected the Tab S5 will be a flagship device.

This has all come quite quickly considering the Galaxy Tab S4 was only unveiled in August last year, a week or so before the introduction of the Galaxy Note 9.

That suggests to us it may still be a bit of a wait until we see the Galaxy Tab S5 hit the market. It would especially be strange for Samsung to announce the slate when most of the attention is on the Galaxy Fold, which is a folding phone that can turn into a 7.3-inch tablet.

Although we don't have any hard and fast details about the Galaxy Tab S5 release date at the moment, our current best guess is that we'll see it introduced ahead of the Galaxy Note 10 toward the end of this year.

The best iPhone 5S deals in April 2019

It's been long replaced by the iPhone SE as Apple's go to budget handset, but if you're looking for a cheap iPhone then the iPhone 5S deals are worth considering before committing to your purchase. Unfortunately deals are now far between and we would recommend going for something newer like the iPhone 6S Plus or iPhone SE if you want an iPhone for a budget price.

Apple is no longer producing iPhone 5S handsets, and so it's no longer available on contract brand new from any of the major networks.

But if you're still interested you can still get one. Refurbished models come on to the market from time to time (although their prices don't look too good) and there are still plenty of retailers stocking the 5S handset only, and for well less than £200. So you could easily buy it SIM-free and then get hold of a cheap SIM only deal to put in it.

This will give you much more flexibility than getting it on contract anyway. We've built a dedicated comparison chart below showing all the best unlocked iPhone 5S prices, or hit the 'Handsets' tab at the top of the first table.

iPhone 5S debuted Apple's newfangled fingerprint sensor and 64-bit processor three years ago, and it's still a viable smartphone for anyone on a budget. It's held up well enough with a good camera and iOS 11 software update - just don't expect the specs of the iPhone X!

It's no great surprise that the trend has been downwards, Between all of the many devices released since the 6S Plus all the way from the 7 Plus up to the iPhone XR there have now been quite a few big screen iPhones to replace this device.

The iPhone 6S Plus is the supersized version of the iPhone 6S.
